Special Announcement - ATTENTION, ATTENTION!!! It's time to do it again!  Announcing the New York Pipe Club 2013 Summer BBQ/Picnic!!!  Once again our own beloved member Hank Saatchi has graciously offered to host our annual pipe club BBQ get-together at his home in East Brunswick, New Jersey.  Last years BBQ was a smash success even in spite of the drizzle - Hank has a cozy screened in area where we were able to continue the smokes!  The party is scheduled for Saturday, July 13th starting at 1pm and the club will provide the comestibles and soft libations (that's food and soft drinks).  Alcohol will be BYOB.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our beloved member Hank , for hosting the event once again and we extend our appreciation for his gracious hospitality. If you never had some of Hank's world famous BBQ, then this is your opportunity!

For our outing this year, of course, as always, pipe smoking is allowed, encouraged, and de rigueur!

The party will start at 1pm, and detailed instructions and directions will be emailed to attendees in a separate mailing very shortly. Hank's place is an easy drive for our New Jersey members and a short ride for those from elsewhere.  For those driving, we will provide detailed directions and maps for your convenience.  For those without cars, take the bus out of Port Authority in NYC to the East Brunswick Tower Center stop or take the North East Corridor Line train from Penn Station to New Brunswick, use the express if possible.  In both cases, we will work on arranging to have you picked up from those stations to Hank's place which is a short drive away.  If we know who is coming we'll also try to coordinate car-pooling from New York City.

IMPORTANT: For those driving, we need you to bring a folding chair or two.  Hank has a limited number of seats so additional seating would be much appreciated.

MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW  -  JUST MARK THE DATE FOR NOW!!!

This event is free and is made possible by your voluntary dues payment of $25 per year.  If you haven't paid your 2013 dues, now would be a great time to do so via the website or by seeing Lou on Sat.  If you aren't sure whether you are a 2013 member, just ask!

This looks to be another great pipe event of the social season, so don't miss it.  Mark your calendars, warn your spouses, and start choosing your best picnic pipes.  See you there!

    NYPC Pipe Tobacco Blends!

As you may have heard, thanks to good friend, Russ Oulette, our own series of four tinned tobacco blends, the NY State of Mind Collection, made their proud debut exclusively on our good friend, Kevin Godbee's informative www.pipesmagazine.com website and "in the tins" at the 2012 Chicagoland Pipe and Tobaccianna Show on May 5th and 6th, compliments of pipesandcigars.com, where our blends were extremely well received by all!  Many thanks go out to Scotty and the gang at pipesandcigars.com, exclusive distributors of our blends, who had a ton of samples which were given away to all.  With our four blend variety, there was something to please almost any taste!

Pipes & Tobaccos Magazine Reviews NY Pipe Club Blends!

As I have been telling you, our club blends currently enjoy favorable and positive reviews in the Fall Issue of Pipes & Tobaccos Magazine's Trial by Fire section on fine tobaccos.  Tobacco tasting connoisseurs Tad Gage and Joe Harb have been reviewing blends for P&T Magazine for years.  Tad Gage is a blender of fine tobaccos and Joe Harb was a judge at the 2012 Chicago Show's John Cotton Throwdown.  Both are well versed in critiquing tobacco blends of all types and their opinions are of the most respected in the hobby.

I am overjoyed, to say the least especially knowing how hard we all worked on achieving the finished product, that our 4 blends received extremely positive and favorable reviews from both of these gentlemen - and of course, I concur!!! (LOL!!!)  But seriously, both Mr. Gage and Mr. Harb enjoyed sampling our blends, loved the artwork - I kid you not, at the 2012 Chicago Show in which our blends debuted, I had requests from pipe smokers who wanted to buy the tins for the artwork alone - I am so proud of that, let alone the blends themselves, and both commented that they would love to revisit the blends after they have put some age on the tins.  So this is fantastic news for our blends!  Pick yourself up a copy of the Fall Issue at your local tobacconist.  If you are not a subscriber to this fine publication you should really consider taking out a subscription and lend them your support.

We will also be receiving print exposure as the blends are scheduled to appear in a future edition of the NASPC's The Pipe Collector Magazine.  If you don't already subscribe to each of these top notch publications, why not support these fine publications devoted exclusively to our hobby and become subscribers.  Follow these links for subscription details:

    http://www.pt-magazine.com/

    http://www.naspc.org/newsletter.htm

...and keep your eyes open for these publications in the near future!

    Speaking of P&T Magazine...

If you are a subscriber to this fine publication then you will already know that the club has placed a quarter page ad which appears, appropriately, in the "Trial By Fire" tobacco review section in the current, Winter 2013 Issue.  A follow up ad will also appear in the Spring 2013 issue.  Here is a copy of our ad, and once again, THANK YOU, to club member Dan Silverstone for lending your expertise in graphical arts for the benefit of our club, I appreciate it!

Our New Club Logo Goes Fashion Forward!!!

I'd like to share with you a cool way for you to sport our new NY Pipe Club logo.

New York Pipe Club Pins Back In Stock!

That's right, thanks to the tireless efforts of beloved members Peter Guss and Dan Silverstone, our new Club Logo Pins are finally in stock, look incredibly great and are ready to be worn on your lapel, as a tie tack, on your NY Pipe Clubware cap or anywhere else you would like to pin them.  The pins are 1"x1" and look exactly like the logo below.  They turned out unbelievably great!  If I had a dollar for every time I was asked for a NY Pipe Club pin at the Chicago Show I'd be able to buy myself a Bo Nordh pipe!  At a cost of only $5.00 each, get yours while they last!  Contact or see Lou at the next meeting to get yours!

My heart-felt THANK YOU goes out to all of you for your generosity throughout 2012.  Again, may you all have a Wonderful, Prosperous, Happy and Healthy  New Year and I look forward to seeing you at our meetings and sharing many bowls with you through 2013!

See you on the 12th at CIRCA TABAC - Lou

    ______________________________

FYI...  Food For Thought...  I am sure you are well aware of the change in our relationship with Florio's while we were meeting there.  Effective with our February 2010 meeting, a $10 per person cover charge was imposed to use the upstairs cigar lounge. Payment of this fee enabled us to continue to use the lounge for our monthly meetings and was collected by the waitress when you entered the lounge.  The fee was for use of the cigar lounge only and did not go to the waitress.  Please note that the main complaint from Florio's management was that the waitress was not sufficiently compensated (tipped) for her service, so please, especially now that we are meeting at a new location, let us heed this message at our new venue, Circa Tabac and I urge you to please tip accordingly as you settle your food and drink tab at the end of the evening.  It will go a long way towards securing our invitation to return.  Circa Tabac has made every effort to ensure our comfort so let's please remember to tip accordingly.  I THANK YOU!

From Lou Carbone, President, NY Pipe Club....

While I do not like to use the Club email system to blast out notices of solicitation, I felt it appropriate in light of what the subject matter might mean to some of us.  It just may be relevant to some of you and I hope that it would be enough to encourage you to place an order so that the efforts do not go by the wayside.  I am talking about the proposed collectible Sailorman Jack Etched Zippo Lighter for 2012.  Have you heard?

I am not sure of how many of you are familiar with the internet discussion newsgroup alt.smokers.pipes, known as “ASP”, which caters to our beloved hobby, but each year those who help maintain the group hold a design contest for their annual collectable Zippo Lighter.  While it came close in recent years, the Sailorman Jack design has finally won and an etched design of our beloved Jack will adorn the side of the Zippo, see photo above.  I think it is a great tribute to our founding member and first President who, sadly, we lost 6 years ago.

I'm not sure who would be interested but I figure that anyone who knew Jack should be notified and at least have the opportunity to purchase one.  Please feel free to forward this to anyone you think would appreciate the opportunity.  I never use a Zippo to light my pipe but I'd be honored to add this one to my collection in honor of Jack.  I think it will complement our Jack's Chanty blend very nicely!

Now comes the hard part about all his…  The problem is that for all special orders, the Zippo Manufacturing Co. has implemented a policy that requires a minimum order of 50 lighters!  So the call went out on the ASP discussion group and only 5 have responded with orders, 2 of which are mine!  So, if an order of 50 cannot be attained, the entire project will be scrapped and time is running out on the project lifespan.  I would hate to see that happen especially because the subject of the lighter has such significance to our club, or at least to those who have been around long enough to have known Sailorman Jack.  Listen, if we can help achieve the required total, great, if not, at least we can say we tried. Besides, if it did not hold such relevance to the NY Pipe Club I would not have taken up your time today.  I appreciate your consideration and apologize for taking up your time.

If you are so moved to place an order, the man you need to contact is Burt Olton.  He is spearheading the project and taking orders.  If you would like to place an order, and since time is now of the essence, I would immediately send Burt an email expressing your interest so that he can add you to his numbers with hopes of reaching the 50 order mark and let Zippo know that we are giving it a fighting chance.  He will direct you from there on what to do next.

For details on how to place an order please see below but I would first contact him via email.

As per Bert Olton from alt.smokers.pipes:

Special Announcement - Apologies for the short notice but... It's time to do it again!  This time we have a change of venue and own beloved member Hank Saatchi has graciously offered to host our annual pipe club BBQ get-together at his home in East Brunswick, New Jersey.  The party is scheduled for Saturday, September 8th starting at 1pm and the club will provide the comestibles and soft libations (that's food and soft drinks).  Alcohol will be BYOB.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our beloved member Todd Platek and his family, for hosting the event for the past three years and we extend our appreciation for his gracious hospitality. We'd also like to thank his son, Nick, our BBQ Pitmaster, for serving up some succulent BBQ over those last three years!

For our outing this year, of course, as always, pipe smoking is allowed, encouraged, and de rigueur!
So long as we can get them delivered by Sat. Sept. 8th, due to the short notice, we'll be providing NYPC Corn Cob Pipes once again this year - this time it will be the Great Dane model!  This is a smooth finished, natural colored full-sized, spool shaped cob and perfect for this year's Danish tobacco theme - two blends from the Scandinavik line of tobaccos: Skandinavik Regular Cavendish and Skandinavik Full Aroma Cavendish.  But as always, the official NYPC 2012 Summer Picnic Corn Cob Pipe will be available only to attendees so be sure to join us!

Free food, free 'baccy, a free cob - who wouldn't want to attend? Whether you can or you can't make it, please RSVP "Yes" or "No" to this email or call Lou at 347-886-9784 by Tues., Sept. 4th the latest, so that we'll have an idea of who is coming. We need to know how much food and drink to buy so please let us know even if you aren't planning to attend the gathering.  Wives and children are also welcome.

The party will start at 1pm, and detailed instructions and directions will be emailed to attendees in a separate mailing very shortly. Hank's place is an easy drive for our New Jersey members.

This event is free and is made possible by your voluntary dues paymet of $25 per year.  If you haven't paid your 2012 dues, now would be a great time to do so via the website or by seeing Lou on Sat.  If you aren't sure whether you are a 2012 member, just ask!

    Tobacco Samplings For July

Please be sure to join us on Tues. evening July 10th where we will be sampling two exquisite English style blends by master blender and dear friend, Russ Oulette, creator - blender of the Hearth and Home series of tobacco blends, not to mention the blender of our own Club Blends.  We will be sampling his Balkan Sobranie Throwdown WINNER from last years Chicago Show, Black House as well as his standout, Magnum Opus.

Black House: The winning blend from the Chicagoland Pipe Show 2011, this blend is a tribute to a great tobacco of the past. Made for the 2011 contest it was judged to be the closest overall to the dark balkan-type mixture it was designed to emulate. For you Virginia Heads it's loaded along with Kentucky, Balkans, Turkish, and even a smattering of Black Cavendish.

    Magnum Opus
: The Latin term Magnum Opus loosely translates to “masterpiece”, and this blend delivers on all notes!  Magnum Opus is a blend of Cyprian Latakia, excellent yellow Virginias from the U.S. and Bulgaria, Izmir, Basma and the “Queen of Tobaccos”, Yenidje. Then some Perique is added to give it more depth and smoothness.

We will also have the four very unique blends from last month's meeting.  These blends represent the blending talents of friend of the club, Marc Cammarata, who submitted them into Russ Oulette's Fusion Lab Blending Project a while back and then sent samples to the club for us to enjoy.  The four blends that will be on hand are:

Old Smokey: carolina ribbon, long cut latakia, green river black cavendish, toasted carolina and red virginia

Sherlock's Cigaro: longcut latakia, perique, cigar leaf and bright virginia, wide cut with a toasted red virginia

Cool Winters Delight: perique, carolina flat cut, toasted burly and green river black cavendish

    CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. VIG!!!

As you already know by now, our own beloved member, long time and past president, Mr. Vernon Vig has been recognized once again on the world stage, and this time, perhaps for a pipeman, even the greatest of honors!  On the evening of Friday, April 13 in Saint - Claude, France, our own Mr. Vig received an honor that most can only dream of.  Vernon was inducted into the Confrerie de Maitres Pipiers.  The "Brotherhood of the Master-carvers" of Saint-Claude was founded in 1966. All of the members (currently 1000) are selected from the world for the passion they have for the Pipe and the hobby.

    As per Vernon,
"The induction ceremony is Friday evening in Saint-Claude. The group is the Confrerie de Maitres Pipiers. Members are the Saint-Claude pipe makers and those they invite. Sebastien Beaud sponsored me for membership. Others being inducted that evening include Poul Winslow and Peter Heinrichs who has the large pipe store in Cologne Germany. I know both so it should be fun. Alain Letulier is going to make a video of the ceremony that we can post and I'll be glad to give a report at the July meeting after Chicago."

I know I speak for all of us when I say, CONGRATULATIONS, VERNON!!!  We are so proud of you!!!  You can tell him so yourself by joining us at our July meeting, as we look forward to hearing the proud report from Vernon who will tell us all about his induction ceremony.  BTW, have you seen the two videos of Vernon's ceremony available for viewing on our website?  Go take a look and be prepared for Vernon's back-story!  We look forward to hearing all about it from Vernon!

    GET WELL, RUSS!!!

    Fantastic Website Changes!

Please be sure to visit our website where you will notice that fantastic changes are in the works!  I am proud to tell you that our own and long time member, Dan Silverstone, a graphic artist by trade, has composed the graphical equivalent of a glorious symphony!  His great talent is on display!  Dan has completely redesigned our club logo and website panels and they look fabulous!  I am also proud to tell you that Dan's graphical genius is also credited for creating the artwork on our four NYPC tobacco tin labels.  In fact, I am also very proud to tell you that many of the conversations I had in Chicago about the blends were of those folks wanting to buy the tins for their artwork alone!  We should be very proud of all the work Dan has done on behalf of the club and I appreciate it so very much.  We will get to see much more of Dan's work as we look forward to debuting the new logo on club shirts, hats, pins and business cards in the near future, so stay tuned for all that and THANK YOU, Dan!

The NYPC was well represented at Chicago, however, we sadly missed our dear friend and blender of our wonderful club tobaccos, Russ Oulette, who, unfortunately, was unable to attend the show due to an unexpected medical emergency.  I am happy to report that he is doing much better and is in great spirits.  To that end, I want to thank everyone who responded to my email request by sending me your personal notes of encouragement (thank you M. Bernhaut for the idea!) wishing Russ "All the Best" on his recovery.  On Monday, I sent Russ a card of encouragement along with all of our personalized notes on behalf of our club.  We wish him the speediest recovery and look forward to having him join us at a future meeting.

Our club continues to impress as I am also proud to present and point you to two wonderfully written articles by club member, Bill Roberts who is now writing feature articles for pipesmagazine.com.  Please be sure to visit http://pipesmagazine.com/blog/pipe-tobacco-reviews/gl-pease-jackknife-ready-rubbed-tobacco-review/#more-5561 for Bill's insightful review of  G.L.
